Danielle, our Manager and Senior Audiologist, joined hearing care professionals from around Australia and New Zealand on a trip to South Africa in May 2017.
The group attended a 2-day audiology conference and then assisted the NDLOVU Care Group, an outreach programme supported by the Oticon Foundation, that provides audiological services in remote communities.
The team of professionals travelled three hours out of Johannesburg to assist the organisation with screenings at the Sibisi Primary School in Dennilton. Working in pairs, the volunteers took ten children at a time and screened their hearing in an empty classroom using tympanometry machines and screening audiometers. With no booth or soundproofing, and without internet connection or mobile phone reception, the conditions contrasted starkly with those here in Australia.
