Danielle, our Chief Audiologist, joined hearing care professionals from around Australia and New Zealand on an educational trip to South Africa in May this year.
The group attended a 2-day educational conference hosted by Oticon and got to assist the NDLOVU Care Group, an outreach programme supported by the Oticon Foundation, that provides audiological services in remote communities.
The team of professionals travelled three hours out of Johannesburg to assist the organisation with screenings at the Sibisi Primary School in Dennilton. Working in pairs, the volunteers took ten children at a time and screened them in an empty classroom using tympanometry machines and screening audiometers. With no booth or soundproofing, and without internet connection or mobile phone reception, the conditions contrasted starkly with those the group had been used to.
